Taxes! Taxes! Taxes!

by Dr. Maria Frangieh

Today has been a historical day for Lebanon. I spent my day watching the news on TV and checking them online. My Facebook wall and my Twitter feed were full of accusations, encouragements to have a revolution, or to attack the Serail, and close the roads with burning tires. On the other hand, others were sad, disappointed, disgusted, etc.. with what they were witnessing.

I am not judging here, I just want to note one thing related to our country’s economy. All those who want a revolution learn from others. All those who want to close a road or attack the Serail check out what happened in other countries of the region where revolutions happened or are happening. These countries had better economies, highly corrupt, yes, but what is for sure, better economies than the ones they have today, after the revolution. Corruption can never be solved by revolutions, reforms and a change in the culture are a must (I don’t want to elaborate this point today).

Have you ever thought that everything destroyed or is going to be destroyed will be paid by us, Lebanese citizens, via the taxes we are paying? We Lebanese always nag and say “we pay a lot of taxes and don’t get anything in return”. Well for every time one area is going to be destroyed, the money collected from taxes will be used to fix this area instead of being used to improve another area.

Do you think that any of our politicians will pay from their own pocket for all the damage that is happening in the country, more specifically the Serail? Of course not! We, and only us will be paying these fees.

Do not get me wrong, you want a revolution have a revolution! But have a revolution while preserving what we currently have, have a peaceful one without directing our country to a situation that we will not be able to tolerate.

May God bless our Lebanon.
